Staff / Students - Nicholas Nolan (PhD Student)
Nicholas joined the CREST team in January 2007 as a postgraduate research student for “the development of photocatalytically active semi-conductor nano-materials for cleaning urban air” under the supervision of Dr. Michael Seery & Dr. Suresh Pillai. He graduated from D.I.T. in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Sciences. He carried out his final year project in Waters Technologies, Wexford for 3 months where he developed and validated a HPLC method for the analysis of Dinitophenylhydrazine (DNPH) air-sampling devices whilst also gaining invaluable experience in the use, operation and maintenance of the most up to date HPLC equipment. He also spent a summer monitoring pollution in a waste treatment plant for Wexford Creamery, where he carried out BOD, COD and dissolved oxygen measurements before investigating probable cause of high COD levels and providing possible solutions.
