Emma MacHugh graduated in 2015 with a BSc in Chemical Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry from Dublin Institute of Technology. While undertaking her degree she completed several projects including a final year project with CREST entitled “Investigation of the role of hybrid sol-gel materials on the optical properties of organic dyes”. While carrying out this project she gained valuable experience in sol-gel chemistry.
Emma joined CREST in August 2015 as a postgraduate student under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Oubaha (CREST Senior Research Manager) and Dr. Brendan Duffy (CREST Centre Manager). She is currently working on microfluidic sol gels for medical sensing. Her research is centred on using hybrid sol-gel materials to create a novel microfluidic sensor platform for the medical diagnostics industry.
